Dan dedicated many years of his career to Lidgerwood Mundy as a machinist before retiring. Known for his perfectionism, his skills in machining and woodworking were unparalleled. A true jack of all trades, Dan could build anything with a motor, from three-wheeled putters to motorcycles. He had a deep love for the outdoors, particularly fishing in the White River in Mason, WI. He loved that river because, as he often joked, it moved slow—just like him. He’d just want you to live your life, enjoy every minute you have with family and friends and keep God First in everything you do.

Richard “Rick” W. Whiting, age 58 of Ashland, WI passed away peacefully with his loving family near his side on Friday, January 31, 2025. Rick was born on July 9,1966 in Ashland, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Vandergon) Whiting.
Rick attended Ashland High School. Upon graduation, he continued his education at UW Madison, earning a degree in Education. He taught at the Ashland High School for 29 years, retiring in 2021. Rick’s life was filled with laughter, meaningful visits with his people, and finding ways to improve the lives of others. Rick had an insatiable desire to learn.
This served him well as he devoted his career to education, enhancing the lives of countless students over his years as a high school teacher and coach. Rick enjoyed learning from his students as much as teaching them. He spent countless hours outside of the classroom working to make his classes educational, entertaining, and always thinking of new/different ways to engage all of his students. He could always be easily convinced to open up the gym for anyone who wanted to go on a weekend or over a school break and would frequently be found at the center of starting a game of baseball, soccer, driveway basketball, or touch football.
In July 1989 he met his future wife, Anne(Loftus). After a brief 6 week courtship, they were engaged and united in marriage on June 16, 1990 in Dayton, MN. He loved their love story the most and when asked how they knew so soon he would say, “dance or get off the floor.” Together they raised 4 children, coached countless teams, fostered a number of teens, and were active community members. His wish for all of his children was to find the same joy and happiness that he found in his marriage and always encouraged the young adults around him to also find someone who makes them better.
His four children were his priority through it all. He was actively involved in coaching youth teams, starting backyard games, chauffeuring kids any place they needed to go. He loved having conversations about life, history, sports, and everything in between. It wasn’t uncommon for the kids coming over to hang out or have a movie night to end up sitting in the kitchen having long chats. He made a point to spend time with all of his kids with different hobbies. He and the boys would spend hours in the garage tinkering, and exploring the countryside on their dirt bikes. He and the girls would go for roadtrips, grocery store runs, and have dance/music parties.
He prioritized “his people”, doing anything to find an extra moment with them. He loved car rides with his brother Craig, giving his kids a ride, sitting on the porch with Anne and talking about life.
He was an important father figure, role model and encourager-in-chief to many people in his life. Rick enjoyed his morning coffee chats, walks with the dog, Lake Superior, motorcycle trips and more than anything he loved time with his wife and children. He was most proud of his wife Anne and the family they raised. As the disease took away so much of his independence, Rick was able to experience life from the Rickshaw, allowing him to join in disc golfing, bike rides and drinking affogatos.
Throughout the trials that life presented, Rick maintained his positive outlook and ability to feel the support around him. He and Anne faced hard times together while holding onto their love and leaning into their faith. Rick’s impact will only continue to grow as his children and grandchildren continue his legacy of love, compassion and curiosity. His family thanks the countless community members, family and friends for their ongoing support, food, cleaning, and love over the past year.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Anne M. Whiting; children, Amanda (Adam) Coykendall, Anika (Cole) Schreiner, Thomas (Kelsey) Whiting and Zach Whiting; siblings, Chuck (Jean) Whiting, Craig (Bonita) Whiting and Beth (Al) Smith; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia Whiting; father and mother-in-law, Thomas and Joyce Loftus.
A celebration will be held Friday, February 21st from 5:00-8:00pm at the Gathering Barn in Ashland. Refreshments will be served.
A Memorial Service for Rick will be held at 11 o’clock, Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the Presbyterian Congregational Church in Ashland, WI with pastor Jim Deters officiating. A luncheon will be served after the service at the church.
A gathering of family and friends will begin at 10 o’clock, and continue until the hour of service at the church. We welcome all who knew and loved Rick to join us.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home of Ashland, WI.

Muriel Anne Erickson of Bayfield passed peacefully at her home on January 29th, surrounded by her loving family and faithful dog, Momma. Muriel was born on July 31st, 1931, in Ashland, WI, to Fred and Beatrice (Shefchik) Roffers.
Muriel attended Saint Agnes Grade School and graduated from De Padua High School in 1949. During high school, she worked at her dad’s Ford garage as a bookkeeper. Following high school, Muriel attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin. She majored in Home Economics and minored in English Education. She was also a founding member of the Stout chapter of the Tri-Sigma National Sorority. She graduated in May 1953. Her first teaching position following graduation was at Rice Lake High School, where she taught Home Economics.
On June 16th, 1954, she married Jim Erickson in Ashland at Saint Agnes Catholic Church. Together, they made their home in Bayfield, where they raised six children. In 1956, they purchased the Erickson farm from Jim’s grandparents, Martin and Christine Erickson, and the adjoining farm from Olaf Selfor. Together, they established what is now known as Erickson Orchards and Country Store. It was their partnership, a shared belief in never giving up, and a lot of hard work that made the farm what it is today.
Muriel started teaching home economics in Bayfield in 1954. She wasn’t just a teacher but a dedicated staff member, friend, and a second mom to many of her students. They affectionately referred to her as “Mrs. E,” and many have kept in contact with her throughout the years, frequently stopping by to give her a hug and updates on their lives. She never thought of teaching as just a job but rather a calling, and one that she thoroughly enjoyed.
Muriel retired from teaching in Bayfield in 1990 and began what she referred to as her “second chapter” by opening the country store. When you entered the country store, you were met with the wonderful aroma of her famous apple cider donuts and additional baked goods, along with Muriel’s homemade jams, jellies, and preserves. She worked tirelessly along with her sidekick and best buddy, Marian Larson. The country store was truly her pride and joy.
While being a business owner, teacher, and mother, Muriel was also very civically minded and was an active member of the Bayfield community and Holy Family Catholic Church. She served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and parish council member. Muriel was also a proud member of the Junior League and Bayfield Civic Service League and loved participating in the Bayfield Follies. Additionally, she served on the board of the Bayfield and Community Education Foundation. Muriel worked with Jim to establish the Bayfield Apple Festival and was never a bystander. She believed it was her civic duty to serve and lead wherever and whenever she could. Muriel was forever a daredevil who never met a roller coaster she didn’t like or a water slide too crazy. Snowmobile rides through the orchard were always an adventure, and her laugh would echo through the trees when yet again she made a toboggan full of people fall off.
While Muriel had many different passions and interests, it was her family that was truly the most important. Each grandchild would swear that they were her favorite. She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
Muriel is survived by her children, Cindy (Ken) Nourse, Vicky (Rocky) Tribovich, Beth Erickson, former son-in-law Ken Kasinski, Fred (Julie) Erickson, and Paula (Don) Anderson; grandchildren Amanda (Ryan) Lang, Kate (Lenny) LaPointe, Jeremy (Aimee) Erickson, Jen Carey, Joe (Krista) Nourse, Donnie (Briana) Anderson, Emily (Casey) Nourse, Abbie (Jordan) Tyznik, Jenna (Chris) Gamble, Jamee (Porter Arvidson) Hansen, Jake Hansen, Dana (Nick) Wszalek, Ana (Tyler) Stoklasa, and Kaycee (Adrian) Schlueter. Great-grandchildren Madison, Lucas, Elise, Sully, Isla, Layne, Leona, Leo, Bennett, Bryson, Aurora, Charlie, Nicolas, Cameron, Oliver, Brooklyn, Owen, Eli, and Drew. Sisters-in-law Nancy Erickson and Sally Roffers. Her dear friend Marian Larson. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Beatrice Roffers, her siblings Dave and Dale Roffers along with sister-in-law Kay Roffers, Husband Jim Erickson, and daughter Mary Erickson-Hansen.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude and love to Theresa Gordon and Debra Newago-Proulx. These two incredible women provided invaluable support during Muriel’s final year. Their gracious and loving care, together with the efforts of her children and grandchildren, enabled her to remain in her home.

Some of her favorite bands were AC/DC, Foreigner, ZZ Top, Paul Cauthen, Aerosmith, Melissa Etheridge, Joyann Parker, and Head East. Her love of music inspired her to take piano lessons and she played for many years. Tammy had many collections– Tie-dyed T-shirts, jewelry, minions, pens, shoes, to name a few. While traveling, if there was a T-shirt or pen to save as a souvenir, she would not hesitate to add to her collection. Animals were a big part of her life. She enjoyed her pets but also volunteered at the animal shelter. She spent many years feeding the local wildlife. While initially upset when George brought home a new motorcycle, she grew to enjoy their rides together taking in the beautiful scenery. Her most recent hobby was making bracelets. She taught herself various designs through watching YouTube videos and loved gifting them to friends and family.
She is survived by her husband, George, daughter Kayla (Jake) Rieb, granddaughter Juniper; and step-daughters Heather Brandis and Kristie Coard; step-grandchildren Quinn, Riley, Josalyn, Khanu, and Ayzlin, and step-great-grandson Kai. Sisters Deborah (Dan) Hildebrandt, Renee (Jeff) Yurek, and Jodi (Tim) Hilgart, and brother Richard Brassington; mother-in-law Lois Brandis, brothers and sisters-in-law Ed and Cindy Brandis, Patty and Clint Nelson, Sandy and Kevin Burns, David Brandis, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was proceeded in death by her parents Kenneth and Elaine.
